In Malawi’s Kasungu district, Futuristic Hope Action (FHA) is leading a transformative initiative that combines environmental conservation with economic empowerment. FHA journey began in 2022 by Hope Mandala, the managing director, after attending the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (NSSCJ) at Kenyatta University in Kenya.
Inspired by the concept of green jobs and entrepreneurship, Hope returned home to create an initiative addressing environmental challenges while providing sustainable livelihoods for communities. This led to the founding of a beekeeping initiative in Mponda village, aimed at empowering youth and women with skills in honey production.
Kasungu district, located in Malawi’s central region, covers approximately 7,878 km² and has a population of 950,234 people as of 2023. The district has faced significant forest loss—46.7 ha of natural forest were lost between 2010 and 2021—mainly due to tobacco curing and reliance on forests for livelihoods, including charcoal burning and firewood selling.
These environmental pressures, combined with unemployment among youth and women, have exacerbated food insecurity, poverty, and exposure to dry spells, floods, heat waves, and other climate-related challenges.
With support from the Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) under the framework of “Supporting Needs-Based Advocacy on Adaptation in Africa,” FHA integrates honey production with fruit tree planting and vegetable farming. This approach simultaneously tackles environmental degradation and economic insecurity.
Beekeeping goes beyond honey production—it represents a broader effort to restore ecosystems and create alternative livelihoods for marginalized communities. The initiative began with five beehives in 2022, made possible with support from Kenyan partners.
Currently, 40 community members in Mponda participate actively, with 20 beehives installed in January 2025 (10 Topbar hives and 10 Langstroth hives). By October 2025, the number of hives is expected to reach at least 80, increasing honey harvests and income for the participants.
